Charity - Hairy Crab Donations The Hairy Crab Invitational has raised over $250,000 for the Fudan University Children's Hospital Intensive Care Unit. Thanks to all our participants, sponsors, contributors, organizers and friends. Past contributions have paid for training, equipment and an ambulance. Last year, Dr. Wu sent us the hospital's three year plan for new donations. Recently, he sent us a 2006 update on ICU's progress. Checkout Joey's 2007 Update.
Hairy Crab Invitational donations, coupled with the ongoing endowment from the JMI Group, are being used to purchase leading edge medical equipment for the Hospital's Emergency Room and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). As you might imagine, our contributions are deeply appreciated and making an immediate difference in infant survival rates.

------------------------------------------------------------- Hairy Crab/JMI Ambulance in service in Shanghai Fudan University Children's Hospital has taken possession of a brand new Ford ambulance purchased with donations from The Hairy Crab Invitational and the JMI Group.
Stew Beck and Joey Tatelbaum joined hospital officials for the dedication of the new vehicle April 28th, 2004.
Stew passed along the following story: "In mid-April, a 2-week-old infant in critical condition with a congenital heart problem was flown from Guilin to Shanghai. The child was met at Hongqiao Airport by the Children's Hospital staff in our ambulance! We're happy to report that the first ever Hairy Crab ambulance ride was a huge success -- following heart surgery, the first passenger is doing well and on the road to recovery." ------------------------------------------------------------- The Three-Year Plan on Using the Donations from JMI for the ICU of the Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University

A Summary About the Conditions of the ICU in the Children’sHospital Affiliated to Fudan University: Successes to Far and Challenges Ahead
For several years, with the financial support of the Hairy Crab Golf Tournament and the JMI Foundation, the Fudan University Children’s Hospital has been taking the lead throughout the country in such aspects as advanced medical instruments & apparatus, personnel training, and the level of medical treatment and curing as well as the service capacity. The general circumstances are summarized as follows:
A. The ICU has been equipped with Medical Instruments up to World Standard.
Prior to receiving this financial support, the equipment of the ICU could barely fill the requirements of clinical treatment. The quality and quantity of the equipment was not up to the minimum standard of a university teaching hospital. The hospital spent the first round of funding on two sets of full-function respirators, one set of portable respirator and one set of central monitoring system (covering the minimal amount of sick beds in the ward at the time.), fiber bronchoscope, automatic peritoneal dialyser, auricular defibrillator and some micro transfusion pumps, thus the equipment of the ICU had reached the required standard.
B. The Patients Transferring System & Curing Capacity have been Improved & Perfected
The next round of financing bought a fully heated and automated respirator used for the transfer of very sick infants within the hospital. Later the donations financed a high tech ambulance that, along with the mobile respirator allowed the hospital to transfer very sick patients from other hospitals into our ICU and surgical ward. Further financing allowed two nurses to study at St Marys Hospital of Hong Kong University. They were trained in mobile Intensive care, and this has allowed the hospital to render services of transferring and curing critical neonates in Shanghai Municipality, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, and raised a lot the success rate of rescue as well. Up to now the hospital has successfully transferred and cured around 800 patients including the “Quadruplets” who are well-known throughout the country and the critical child from Taiwan which has aroused high attentions on both sides of Taiwan Straits. Thus the hospital has become the largest first-aid center of critical newborns in Shanghai and East China areas.
C. A Large Number of Medical Personnel throughout the country have been trained for Pediatric Rescue
The donations have not only benefited the ICU of the Children’s Hospital itself, but also allowed us to train a large number of medical personnel from everywhere of the country, especially from those outlying districts, so that still more sick children may enjoy the benefits of medical treatment and the hospital affiliated to a university can play its role better. Every year the hospital trains about 50 doctors and 30 nursing staff for ICU from the grass-roots hospitals and run three times of continuous study classes for doctors and nurses.
D. The Development and International Exchange
As a result of the financial aid from Hairy Crab Golf Tournament and the JMI Foundation and the hard work of the hospital staff, the ICU of the Children’s Hospital has turned into the pediatric rescue center. We treat the highest amount of patients with the most complicated diseases in Shanghai area and we are playing an important role in preventive treatment of SARS and Bird Flu. We have won the enthusiastic praise from the government and the general population. Consequently, the ICU ward has been appointed as the key branch of learning, the key laboratory of the Ministry of Health and the financing base of Chinese Medical Board of America (CMB) for training the pediatricians from the grass-roots hospitals of China. At present the hospital cooperates with Canadian Neonates Federation in cultivating high quality doctors and nurses especially for the rescue of neonates for a long term. Also the hospital has run successfully three Shanghai International Pediatrics Symposiums. This is a major teaching event that brings together pediatric colleagues from all over China.
E. More Work Left To Do We appreciate very much the efforts and the support of the people making these donations. They have had a major impact on people’s lives. We have a lot more work to do and future donations will allow us to reach out further and to gain new heights. WU Jinglei The First Aid Division of the Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University April 2006
2006/7 saw the continued support for the hospital from The Hairy Crab. The equipment donated to date is having a significant impact on the hospital and its work on very sick children. The Crab-donated monitoring system has greatly increased the capacity of the ICU to handle special cases and survival rates have continued to improve. Patient load in one specialized area of the infant ICU has increased from 300-600 patients on an annualized basis.
Specialized anti-choking equipment donated by the Hairy Crab has had a significant impact on the hospital’s ability to help victims. Another machine is presently being ordered, using Hairy Crab supplied funds, for use on very small children. In 2006 the Hairy Crab donated ambulance was used to transport a very sick child and his family to Taiwan via Xiamen. The ambulance was ferried to an offshore island where the child was then transported back to Taipei. The Hairy Crab donated mobile intensive care unit was used throughout the trip. This was an extraordinary effort that gained attention on both sides of the Taiwan straights. In its own way, then, the Hairy Crab is contributing to world peace.
For 2007 the hospital has submitted a wish list for equipment. Hopefully, incoming donations will allow us to help them to purchase this much needed equipment. At the same time, Hairy Crab donations will be used for extensive training. This training will have three parts. 1. Sending staff abroad for training. The hospital has ongoing relations with the major children’s hospitals in Stockholm and in Vancouver. 2. Sending staff to far away hospitals within China to help train Doctors and Nurses in the less wealthy parts of China. 3. Bringing Doctors and Nurses to the hospital for training within the facilities in Shanghai. All of these trainings will contribute not only to ongoing improvements within our facility, but to helping poorer regions of China improve their abilities to help children as well. Hopefully, our donations will help make lots of kids healthier all over China. The Hairy Crab is a great golf tournament. It is a great thing that we can have so much fine while we are doing good at the same time.
