Fudan University Children's Hospital

The Emergency Room (ER) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University are the main centers for emergent and critical pediatrics cases in Shanghai as well as in all of east China. The ER is visited by more than 10,000 cases annually. Each year, there are more than 500 cases monitored and treated in ICU due to various critical situations, such as respiratory failure, heart failure, trauma and accident, shock, asthma and epilepsy.

In 2001, we received generous donations from the Hairy Crab Invitational and the JMI group including a ventilator, portable ventilator, central monitor system, transport incubator and computer. Donations also supported sending two ICU nurses to Hong Kong for six months training at Queen Mary Hospital. The survival rate in our ICU is now more than 90%.

Thanks to the support of the Hairy Crab Invitational and the JMI group, the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University was appointed by the Shanghai Public Health Bureau as the official center of respiratory diseases and critical care (including neonatal care) and the center of pediatric surgery. The hospital is No.1 on the total number of out-patient, in-patient service and operation among the Children’s Hospitals in Shanghai. The children case numbers treated during 2002 in the ICU were twice as many as in 2000. The hospital also now offers training courses (pediatric emergency and critical care) twice a year for pediatricians coming from all over China.

Considering further development and offering higher quality service to the sick children, our planned future purchases include a high frequency ventilator, three monitors (connected to the central monitor system), automatic peritoneal dialysis system and intravenous infusion pumps.
